Tetra-n-butyl urea is a transparent or slightly yellowish liquid with a viscosity slightly higher than that of water. It is mainly used as the hydrogen anthraquinone solvent in the new process for producing hydrogen peroxide by the anthraquinone method. Compared with tri-isooctyl phosphate, it has the advantage of higher solubility of hydrogen anthraquinone; a larger distribution coefficient of H2O2 in the two phases; a large density difference between tetra-n-butyl urea and water; and a large surface tension, etc.
